Violence erupted in between two communities in Baduria of Basirhat on the night of July 3rd over a Facebook post. The violence turned worse when the mob attacked members of the community and damaged shops in the area.

Three of BJP MLAs with their teams tried to visit this area. However, MPs Meenakshi Lekhi, Om Mathur, and Satyapal Singh were refused entry into the riot-hit area and the members were detained by the police.

The police stopped the vehicle with the three MPs that started from Delhi to reach Basirhat. They were close to the airport near Birai and were sent back. The MPs had a heated argument with the police before they got detained.

The MP Lekhi proceeded to say “We are MPs and only we three will go there. You accompany us.” the police, however, refused this request. The government of West Bengal, Trinamool Congress, has ordered a probe into the communal violence in the Basirhat sub-division.

The Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the probe would be handed over to either a sitting judge or a retired judge of the Calcutta High Court.
