British PM Boris Johnson Cancels Visit To India On Republic Day

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the 5th of January, cancelled his planned trip to India.

Mr. Boris was invited to be the chief guest on Republic Day, the 26th of January

However, Mr. Boris said it was important for him to remain in the United Kingdom (U.K.,) to focus on the domestic response to the virus.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said that Johnson Boris spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the morning and expressed his regret that he will be unable to visit India later this month as planned.

“The prime minister spoke to Prime Minister Modi this morning, to express his regret that he will be unable to visit India later this month as planned,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said, “In light of the national lockdown announced last night, and the speed at which the new coronavirus variant is spreading, the prime minister said that it was important for him to remain in the UK so he can focus on the domestic response to the virus.”

On the 15th of December, the U.K., accepted the invitation of Indian Government and confirmed to be the Chief Guest at Republic Day on the 26th of January 2021.
