Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi, a leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) is scheduled to take the oath as the next Chief Minister of Punjab.

On the 19th of September, the All India Indian National Congress Committee (AICC) and senior leaders of the INC in Punjab, held a meeting and decided to elect Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi. After being elected as the new CM of Punjab, Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi, met with the Governor of Punjab and to stake a claim to form his government in the State.

Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi is the three time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Chamkaur and becomes the first Dalit CM and 16th Chief Minister of Punjab.

The developments came after Captain Amrinder Singh Gill, the former CM of Punjab, submitted his resignation. On the evening of the 18th of September, Mr. Amrinder Singh Gill resigned from his CM post, citing internal power issues and rift to be a reason for the step. With this, Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi got an opportunity to be the Chief Minister of the poll bound State. It is to be noted, Punjab is going to have its Assembly polls in 2022. Parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are eying to win the majority of seats and form the government in the State.

Meanwhile, Harish Rawat, a senior INC leader, addressed the media and said, ““I am proud to be part of the process of making the first Dalit CM for the state. We will try to bring Captain Amarinder Singh on board. There will be two Deputy Chief Ministers. Only the Chief Minister will take oath tomorrow and the cabinet will take it later. The decision on making Dalit a CM should help us in other poll-bound states. The decision for the face for upcoming polls will be taken later.”

In addition, besides Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi, the INC appointed Mr. Sukhjinder Randhawa as the Deputy Chief Minister and Mr. Brahm Mohindra as the AICC Treasurer in Punjab.

All the three newly appointed CM, Deputy CM and AICC Treasurer would take the oath at 11:00 A.M. Ahead of the oath taking ceremony, Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi visited the Gurudwara Sri Katalgarh Sahib of Chamkaur Sahib with his family members.

The oath taking ceremony would be a low key event with limited leaders and attendees, in the wake of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus pandemic. Navjot Singh Sidhu, Rahul Gandhi and other leaders of the INC would attend the oath taking ceremony.

Mr. Amrinder Singh Gill is likely to skip the swearing in ceremony today, the 20th of September.
