Amit Jogi, son of Ajit Jogi, the former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, was arrested on the 3rd of September.  He was alleged of furnishing false details in his election affidavit.

Sameera Paikra, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) filed a case on the 3rd of February 2019 under Sections 420 (Cheating,) 467 (forgery of valuable security,) 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)

Ms. Sameera said Amit Jogi mentioned wrong birthplace and caste in his affidavit for contesting the 2013 Assembly elections.  She said Amit Jogi stated he was born in Sarbahara area of Bilaspur, whereas, he was born in the United States of America (U.S.A.)

Sameera Paikra contested against Amit Jogi in the 2013 Assembly elections from a reserved seat in Marwahi, Chhattisgarh.

According to sources, Paikra approached the High Court and alleged Amit Jogi of presenting false information in his election affidavit.  However, the High Court rejected the plea and dismissed the case on the grounds of the term of the Assembly ending.

The Bilaspur Police said, “Amit Jogi was arrested from Marwahi Sadan in Bilaspur, based on the FIR lodged against him in February this year at Gaurela police station in the district.”

Later, the BJP approached the Chhattisgarh Police and filed a fresh case of cheating against Mr. Jogi.  The police raided Jogi’s house and arrested him from his residence.

Recently, the Central Government constituted a high level committee to scrutinise the case and dismissed Ajit Jogi’s claim of belonging to a Scheduled Tribe (ST) and cancelled his caste certificates.

The police, on the 29th of August 2019, also filed a case against Ajit Jogi for falsely obtaining caste certificates under Section 10(1) of the Chhattisgarh Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (Regulation of Certification of Social Status) Rules, 2013.

Prashant Agarwal, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bilaspur Police, said the case was registered after the district administration directed the State Police to file a fresh case.

An investigation regarding the case is underway.
