Chipko Movement: Google Celebrates 45th Anniversary With Doodle

Google’s Doodle today celebrates the 45th anniversary of the Chipko Movement. Started in 1970s, the Chipko Movement was a non violent protest to conserve forests.

The name of the movement Chipko translates to sticking to something. The people embraced trees to protect them from being cut. The Chipko Movement began in Rajasthan where a local woman Amrita Devi led the race. She risked her life with 84 villagers to preserve the forest trees that were being cut on the local king’s order.

The first Chipko action happened in April 1973 in Mandal in the Himalayan districts. The Chipko Movement slowly moved to the rest of the country and then the world. This Movement follows Gandhi’s principles of Satyagraha.
