The Indian Army issued an advisory to the citizens of India about fake news regarding the current situation in Assam and other northeastern states.

After the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha and the President of India approved the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, the citizens of Assam, Meghalaya and other northeastern states are protesting against it.

Police officials and the Indian Army advisory said social media posts about the activities in the northeastern states are not true and many false stories were reported so far.

The Indian Army advisory said, “Be cautious against fake news and disinformation being spread by some suspicious people on social media regarding its activities in the northeast, do not pay heed to false news.”

The Indian Army took to Twitter and posted the same.

Students’ organisations, citizens of India, opposition political parties’ leaders and many others are protesting against the Central Government for introducing the Act.

Not just the northeastern states, but states like Kerala, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Mumbai are also protesting against the Act.

Approved by Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, promises citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh based on their religious beliefs.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act is expected to accept as many as 130 crore refugees who belong to the Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Jain, Christian and Buddhist communities and have been residing in India since or before the 31st of December 2014.
