The outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana, on the 4th of August, recommended Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor.

CJI N.V. Ramana, who is due to retire from his post on the 26th of August, sent the recommendation letter to the Government of India (GoI.)   He even handed over a copy of the recommendation to Justice Uday Umesh Lalit.  Notably, if appointed by the Government of India, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit would be the second judge to be elevated from bar bench to the CJI post.

The recommendation from the outgoing CJI N.V. Ramana came after the Central Government asked him to recommend his successor.  Now, the Union Law Minister Mr. Kiren Rijiju would proceed with the procedure and put the CJI’s recommendation before Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  Furthermore, Mr. Narendra Mpdi would later forward the same with his advice to the President of India Ms. Draupadi Murmu.

The selection of the CJI is based on a seniority basis and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is the senior judge of the Supreme Court.  Moreover, he has been part of several landmark judgements including the one which held the practice of divorce through instant ‘triple talaq’ among Muslims illegal and unconstitutional.

The new CJI would be the 49th Chief Justice of India.
