Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the 26th of November, addressed the Parliament and saluted Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar for drafting the Constitution of India.

On the occasion of India’s Constitution Day, PM Modi said, “The two mantras of the Constitution are ‘dignity for Indians’ and ‘unity for India.’”

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was the first Law Minister of India and played a major role in drafting the Constitution of India.  The Prime Minister paid tribute to Dr. Ambedkar and said he would be happy to see how India strengthened and empowered its democracy since the Constitution was adopted 70 years ago.

Mr. Modi addressed the Members of Parliament (MPs) at the Central Hall of Parliament and said, “Had Babasaheb Ambedkar been alive today he would have probably been the happiest man.”

In his speech, PM Modi said the Constitution of India is like a holy book and expressed happiness about the faith of Indians in democracy.

Mr. Narendra Modi said, “I bow down to 130 crore Indians, who never let their faith in India’s democracy diminish. (I have) always considered our Constitution to be a holy book, a guiding light.”

He further added, “The Constitution of India highlights both rights and duties of citizens. Gandhiji (said) we can only expect all rights when we perform our duties to perfection. Thus, according to the father of our nation, duties and rights are directly linked.”

Mr. Modi also urged the citizens of India to contribute to the Nation by performing their duties.

Highlighting some of these duties, Mr. Modi said, “If a citizen saves every drop of water, he’s performing his duty. If he’s getting immunization done at the right time, he’s performing his duty. If he’s voting, he’s performing his duty. If he’s paying his taxes, he’s performing his duty.”

Besides the Constitution Day, 26/11 marks 11 years since the Mumbai terror attacks took place.  PM Modi also paid his respects to those who were killed in the attack which took place on the 26th of November 2008.  He said, “I pay tributes to those killed in the Mumbai terror attacks.”

This year, India celebrates its 5th Constitution Day.  In 2014, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power, they started celebrating the day as Constitution Day.  The 26th of November was chosen as Constitution Day because National Law Day is also celebrated on the same day.

Political leaders and parties took to Twitter and paid homage to Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar for drafting the Constitution of India, with #ThanksDrAmbedkar and #ConstitutionDay.

Stay tuned for further updates.
