Daler Mehndi the famous Punjabi singer was sentenced to two years of imprisonment on Friday. This was in connection with a 2003 human trafficking case. The proceedings were conducted at the Patiala Court in Punjab where the singer was found guilty. But the Court immediately granted the musician bail.
It was proven than Mehndi and his brother Shamsher duped several people with the promise of relocating them to the U.S. The musician and his brother charged people to illegally dump them in the U.S.
The Mehndi brothers took the people to the U.S., disguising them as troupe members and left them in the country illegally. The case became public when Bakshish Singh in 2003 lodged a complaint against Mehndi. Singh alleged that the brothers duped him with promises of sending him abroad.
In 2016, the Patiala Police filed two discharge petitions stating Mehndi is innocent. The Court kept the petitions aside and continued to prosecute the singer. A news report has claimed Mehndi managed to pay a meager fine of Rs. 10,000 and got away from the prison sentence.
