Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, the Election Commission (EC) officers are scheduled to meet the Delhi Police personnel on the 31st of January.

The decision to do so came after Gopal, a 19 year old man, opened fire at a student, Shadab Najar, during an anti Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) rally at the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) university in Delhi.  The bullet hit Shadab Najar’s left hand. He is undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS,) Delhi.

After the implementation of the CAA, 2019, Delhi has become a place of protests and violence.  Citizens of Delhi as well as students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU,) JMI) and other universities are protesting against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The EC officials, along with the Delhi Police, are on a visit to Shaheen Bagh, which is currently known as the protest site of Delhi.  Since a month, people are protesting at Shaheen Bagh against the CAA, which gives citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.  Refugees who are Jains, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and Parsis and have been residing in India since or before the 31st of December, 2014, would get citizenship under the CAA.

Since the Act does not include Muslims, people are staging protests and demanding the Act be scrapped.

While the EC officials visited Shaheen Bagh, Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, conducted a roadshow in Raghubir Nagar, Delhi.

The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on the 8th of February and the results would be announced on the 11th of February.

The major parties contesting the Delhi Assembly elections are the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP,) the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC.)
