The Delhi High Court, on the 17th of September, transferred all the Aircel Maxis money laundering cases against P. Chidambaram, the former Finance Minister of India, to a special judge.
Previously, O.P. Saini, a Special Judge of the Delhi High Court, was attending to the cases filed against P. Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram. However, now, Ajay Kumar Kuhar, another Special Judge, will handle all the cases against the son and father duo.
Special Judge Kuhar will take over the case from the 1st of October. The decision to transfer the case was taken considering the retirement of O.P. Saini, as Mr. Saini will retire at the end of September 2019.
The Delhi High Court issued an order which read, “Chief Justice and Judges of this Court (High Court) have been pleased to order that cases pertaining to 2G Spectrum scam pending in the Court of Mr. O.P. Saini, District and Sessions Judge cum Special Judge (Prevention of Corruption Act)(CBl,), Rouse Avenue Courts Complex, New Delhi be transferred and allocated to the Court of Special Judge (Prevention of Corruption Act) (CBI)-09, Rouse Avenue Courts Complex, New Delhi presently presided over by Mr. A.K. Kuhar with effect from October 1, 2019, which shall be the designated Court to undertake the trial of the said 2G Spectrum Cases in addition to matters already pending before the Court of Mr. A.K. Kuhar.”
As of now, Judge Kuhar is presiding over the Special Court reviewing the cases against political leaders D.K. Shivkumar, a member of the Indian National Congress (INC,) Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar and his family members and Virbhadra Singh, the former CM of Himachal Pradesh and his family members.
P. Chidambaram is currently in Tihar Jail. He spent his 74th birthday, which was on the 16th of September, in Tihar Jail, where he was shifted on the 5th of September for 14 days.
