On the 8th ofa January, the Tihar Jail in Delhi released a statement regarding the dummy execution of the Nirbhaya case’s convicts.
As the Delhi High Court announced the 22nd of January, 2020, as the day the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape case would be executed, the Tihar Jail would begin the dummy execution process soon.
In its statement, the Tihar Jail administration said, “Tihar to conduct dummy execution in coming days but not today. It will be done in jail 3, where the execution will take place.”
The four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case are Pawan Gupta, Akshay Kumar Singh, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh. A Delhi Court judge, on the 7th of January, signed the death warrant and announced the same.
This is the first time in India four convicts will be hanged together. The dummy execution would involve testing the gallows using weights and others for the same.
Officials of the Public Works Department, the Jail Superintendent and other officials would be present during the dummy execution.
A hangman from the Uttar Pradesh Prison Department would be called to execute the four convicts. The execution of the death sentence would take place at 7:00 A.M., on the 22nd of January.
