Five people died and five are missing after an avalanche (snow slide,) hit a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV,) at Khardung La Pass, in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir.

The administration of Ladakh launched a joint rescue operation with the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) and the police when the incident occurred. However, five dead bodies were recovered, whereas 5 people are still missing.

The rescue team are at the site, located 40 km from Leh, Ladakh and the search operation is still underway.

A Border Road Organisation (BRO) official said, “So far, the bodies of five persons have been recovered from the avalanche site, while a search is on for the other missing persons.”

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD,) on the 17th of January, issued an alert and warned the people of Jammu and Kashmir about the possibility of an avalanche. The warning came after the multiple heavy snowfalls witnessed in the State.

According to the IMD, 9 districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Anantnag, Budgam, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil, Kulgam, Kupwara and Leh, are on high alert. According to the weather forecast, the State will remain on high alert and will witness snowfall from the 19th of January to the 23rd of January. Due to this, people are advised to avoid travelling to the 9 districts.
