Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi Takes Oath As Rajya Sabha Member

Ranjan Gogoi, the former Chief Justice of India (CJI,) on the 19th  of March, took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, nominated Mr. Gogoi as a member of the Upper House.   Newly elected Rajya Sabha member, Ranjan Gogoi has been given seat number 131 in the Rajya Sabha. 

While the Bharatiya Janata Party members were happy about Gogoi’s nomination, members of the Indian National Congress (INC) were disappointed and opposed his nomination.

The INC members even walked out of Rajya Sabha opposing Gogoi’s appointment as Rajya Sabha member.   In support, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) also opposed and walked out.

Besides, retired Supreme Court (SC) judges like Madan Lokur, AK Patnaik and Kurian Joseph spoke against the nomination of Ranjan Gogoi as the Rajya Sabha member.    However, Ranjan Gogoi justified his stand by saying the legislature and judiciary must work together for nation building.

While 37 Rajya Sabha members were elected unopposed, the remaining seats would have a tough fight.  All the states nominated their candidates for the 245 Rajya Sabha seats, state wise.

The Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled to be held on the 26th of March.
