Mr. Shanti Bhushan, the Former Union Law Minister passed away on the 31st of January, Tuesday, at the age of 97.

According to sources, Mr. Shanti Bhushan was not doing well for the past few days and died due to age related ailments at his residence in Delhi.

Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India took to Twitter and expressed condolences on the demise of Mr. Shanti Bhushan.  He tweeted, “Shri Shanti Bhushan Ji will be remembered for his contribution to the legal field and passion towards speaking for the underprivileged.  Pained by his passing away.  Condolences to his family. Om Shanti.”

Mr. Kiren Rijiju, the Union Law Minister also expressed grief and said, “My deepest condolences to the family members on his passing away.  My prayers for the departed soul.  Om Shanti.” 

Furthermore, highlighting the political career of Mr. Shanti Bhushan, he served as the Union Law Minister during the reign of Morarji Desai Cabinet, in between 1977 to 1979.  

He also was an eminent jurist who represented politician Raj Narain in the historic case that led to the annulment of then Prime Minister of India Ms. Indira Gandhi’s election in 1975.  In the historic Raj Narain vs Indira Nehru Gandhi case, the Allahabad High Court in June 1975 disqualified Ms. Indira Gandhi for a period of six years from contesting elections.

Mr. Shanti Bhushan was even active in the legal profession and had argued in the Supreme Court seeking a court monitored probe into the Rafale fighter jets deal.

In his political career, Mr. Shanti Bhushan was also a member of the Indian National Congress and later of joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.  He served as a Rajya Sabha member too in the reign of PM Narendra Modi. 

However, despite being active in Indian politics, Mr. Shanti Bhushan was known for his fierce stand and opinions about the Indian Judiciary system and law and was vocal on the issue of corruption.
