On the late night of the 13th of May, fourteen migrant workers were killed in two different events in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Both the incidents were said to be road accidents, which killed 14 migrant workers and left 55 injured.

The incidents came to light on the morning of the 14th of May, after officials of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh governments reported these incidents.

Uttar Pradesh:

Six migrant workers were killed by a bus at Delhi-Saharanpur Highway,  Muzaffarnagar and five others seriously injured.  According to an initial investigation, the bus driver was driving at full speed under the influence of alcohol, which led to the tragic accident.

Abhishek Yadav, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Muzaffarnagar, arrested the accused driver under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)

Mr. Yadav said, “The workers were going on foot to their homes in Bihar from Haryana when they were hit on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway between Ghalili Check Post and Rohana Toll Plaza, about 20 km from here late last night.”

Madhya Pradesh:

In another incident, 8 migrants were killed and 50 left injured when the truck they were travelling in lost control and collided with a bus in Funa, Madhya Pradesh.

The injured are undergoing treatment in the respective areas of the accidents.

This is not the first reported death of migrants in India after the lockdown came into action.  Many stranded migrants who walked home despite the lockdown died of either starvation, dehydration or road accidents and train accidents.

Recently, 16 migrants were killed in a train accident, when a goods train ran over them in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
