Ugadi is the New Year for most of the Hindus in India. Today is the day many celebrate the new year but also the beginning of the spring season. Here are a few interesting facts about Ugadi.

1. This day is predominantly celebrated by the people who live in areas that fall between the Kaveri and Vindhya rivers.

2. The people in these particular areas follow the lunar calendar of South India.  

3. Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Goa are the one who celebrate Ugadi with pomp and show.

4. Other states also celebrate this day but with different names. Andhra, Telangana and Karnataka call it Ugadi or Yugadi, Marathi people call the festival Gudi Padwa. The Marvadi community in Rajasthan call the day Thapna.

5. The Sindhis on the other hand celebrate Cheti Chand today. The Manipuris celebrate the day as Sajibu Nongma Panba. The Hindu community in Indonesia celebrate the same day but as Nyepi.

6. The word Ugadi is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Yuga’ which means measure of time ad ‘Adi’ which means the beginning.  

7. This festival celebrates the six tastes of life, sp***, bitter, sweet, sour, salty and tangy. Dishes are prepared to trigger each of these tastes.

8. Ugadi legend says today is the day Lord Brahma created the world. According to the legend he woke up one day and yawned to create the four vedas.  

9. The day begins with Hindus eating bittersweet neem leaves. It is said the neem purifies the blood and strengthens the body.

10. Today is the day to eat delicious food like Shrikhand and Puran Poli. The Konkanis made Kanangachi Kheer a desert with sweet potato, coconut milk rice and jaggery. Ugadi is also considered a good day to purchase gold, a new vehicle or starting a new adventure.
