The former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr. H.D. Kumaraswamy, commented on the Mysuru gang rape case.

According to sources, Mr. H.D. Kumaraswamy demanded an encounter for Mysuru gang rape culprits, similar to the Hyderabad Gang rape incident of 2019.

In Hyderabad, a brutal incident of gang rape was reported in 2019. A 23 year old doctor was abducted and gang raped by a group of men in a secluded area of Hyderabad outskirts. Later, she was burnt alive by the accused.

The Hyderabad incident gained a lot of attention demanding strict punishment for the accused. Speaking about the encounter, the Hyderabad Police during the investigation, took all the culprits to the crime spot for the recreation of the incident, then the accused tried to attack the police and escape, police retaliated. V.C. Sajjanar, the then Commissioner of Police of Cyberabad, encountered and killed the accused on the spot. Although the encounter was against the law, as no trials happened in the case, the Hyderabad Police gained appreciation from the public, for punishing the culprits of Disha (name given to the victim.)

Citing the same punishment given to 2019 Disha Gang Rape accused, Mr. H.D. Kumaraswamy said, “I appreciate the Hyderabad police in dealing with a rape case. What did they do finally? Unless stringent action is taken, things will not improve. Culprits in a sexual assault case usually get jail time and then secure bail. This is not effective to control such crimes.” He further added, “The Government should handle it delicately and follow what was done in Hyderabad. The incident in Mysuru is a lapse on part of the Government and it has failed to curb illegal activities even in rural areas.”

Recently, on the 24th of August, a 23 year old girl was brutally gang raped in the forest areas of Chamundi Hills, Mysuru. According to sources, a group of four men allegedly raped a girl and assaulted her male friend. The incident took place around 7:00 P.M., when the girl and her friend were returning from the forest area. It is also reported that the four men were allegedly drunk and were drinking at the spot.

As of now, the girl, who is a native of Uttar Pradesh and was studying in Mysuru is undergoing treatment in a Mysuru hospital. Although the police are yet to record the statement of the victim, they registered a case against the four men on the basis of the statement given by the victim’s friend.

The case has been registered under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC,) at Alanahalli Police Station in Tippayanakera area of Mysuru.

The incident which took place on Tuesday, the 24th of August and gained the media attention, days later. Politicians, netizens and other leaders of Karnataka, expressed grief and demanded strict punishment for the culprits.

In addition, the Indian National Congress (INC) leaders took a dig at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making it a controversial political issue. The opposition in Karnataka also demanded the State Government to impose laws restricting drinking in deserted areas, especially during the late hours.

Meanwhile, the police also started an investigation and are searching for the absconded accused.

The investigation is underway.
