Hyderabad could soon bid goodbye to its name as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to change Hyderabad’s name to Bhagyanagar.

Hyderabad could be renamed if the BJP comes to power in the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections. The name suggested by the BJP was Hyderabad’s previous name until the year 1590, before the Mughals and the Nizams took over as the rulers.

Raja Singh, a BJP MLA, announced if the BJP wins the Telangana Assembly elections, Hyderabad would be renamed as Bhagyanagar. Apart from Hyderabad, the BJP will also change the names of Secunderabad and Karimnagar.

Raja Singh told media sources, “Earlier, Hyderabad was known as Bhagyanagar. In 1590, Quli Qutub Shah came and changed Bhagyanagar to Hyderabad. At that time, many Hindus were attacked, many temples destroyed.” In addition, he said, “In Telangana, BJP will win a majority and then our first aim will be developing the state and second will be renaming Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar. We will also change the names of Secunderabad and Karimnagar.”

Raja Singh stated, the places were named after Mughals and Nizams and should be renamed after those who sacrificed and fought for Telangana and the Country.

The idea came after Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj, Mughalsarai Railway Station to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction and Faizabad to Ayodhya.

Vijay Rupani, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, is also looking into all the legal aspect of renaming Ahmedabad to Karnavati.

Mr. Rupani said, “We are contemplating changing the name of Ahmedabad to Karnavati, the talks of which have been going on since a long time. Concrete steps will be taken after looking at it from legal and all other angles. We will think about it in the time to come.”

After Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and potentially Hyderabad, the Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra also expressed their desire to change the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad. Sanjay Raut, a member of Shiv Sena, addressed Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, in a tweet today, asking him to change the names.
