The Congress Working Committee (CWC,) on the 10th of August, conducted a meeting regarding the selection of the next President of the Indian National Congress (INC.)
After the resignation of Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the INC, the post has been vacant since a long time.
The CWC meeting started at 11:00 A.M., at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, New Delhi.
Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the AICC, Manmohan Singh, Priyanka Gandhi, the General Secretary of the AICC in charge of Uttar Pradesh East and Rahul Gandhi were present during the meeting.
According to sources, during the meeting, the CWC decided to constitute 5 groups from the different States’ Leaders of the INC. The state units and other senior leaders of the INC will discuss who should be the next Chief of the INC.
The CWC will start the process of selecting the INC President after discussions with the state leaders and the workers of the Party in different states. After the consultation, the CWC will conduct another meeting and will approve the decided name.
Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will not be a part of the selection panel and will be out of the discussion regarding the President.
During the meeting, Captain Amarinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab, suggested a young leader should be the next chief of the INC. Milind Deora, the President of INC in Mumbai, suggested the names of Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot for the post.
Shatrughan Sinha, Abhishek Singhi and the Party workers suggested Priyanka Gandhi’s name for the post.
A few Party workers, led by Jagadish Sharma, gathered outside the AICC headquarters and staged a protest with the demand Priyanka Gandhi be made the next chief of the INC.
The workers said, “Priyanka Gandhi should be made the party chief as she has the capability to keep the party together.”
However, the CWC meeting was adjourned and is expected to continue in the evening, following which, the leaders will decide the next step.
The INC needs to appoint a new President as soon as possible because the Party is the only opposition one against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha, with the highest number of Members of Parliament (MPs.)
