Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the 27th of September, addressed the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York.

During his 17 minute speech, Mr. Modi spoke about various issues like leadership, global warming, climate change, development schemes and terrorism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the world a message of “peace and harmony.”

PM Modi said, “Terrorism hurts the principles on which the United Nations was built.”

Speaking about terrorism, Modi said, “We belong to a country that has given the world Budd (Buddha’s message of peace,) not ‘Yuddh’ (war.) When we raise our voice against terror, it is with seriousness and anger.”

He thanked the UNGA for inviting him and expressed his happiness.  He also said the event is special as the world celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi this year.

Mr. Modi also spoke about the successful campaigns launched in India for cleanliness and sanitation.  He said during his reign, India finished world’s biggest sanitation programme by building 11 crore toilets in 5 years.  He further added India launched a health insurance scheme benefitting approximately 50 crore people of India.

He also stated the Country launched a ‘no single use plastic’ campaign and urged the citizens of India not to use plastic bags.  Mr. Modi said, “Before coming here, I read on the walls of the United Nations building, ‘No more single use plastic.’ I am delighted to tell you that we in India are running a huge campaign to stop single use plastic.”

Speaking about the agenda of the 2022 Independence Day, Mr. Modi said by 2022, the Central Government of India will build 2 crore homes for the poor.

Modi said he is not only working for India, but for the development of the world and said the Government of India’s motto is “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.”

Raising the global warming issue, Modi said global warming has increased the frequency and ferocity of natural disasters.  He said, “That’s why we have formed the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI.) I invite the world to join this coalition.”

After Modi’s UNGA speech, Twitter was flooded with congratulatory messages.  UN leaders and Indians appreciated Mr. Modi for speaking about several issues at the UNGA and highlighting the contribution of India.

Mr. Modi was in the United States of America (U.S.A.,) to attend the ‘Howdy, Modi’ event and the UNGA session.  He also conducted several bilateral meetings with foreign delegates.

Mr. Modi concluded his visit with a thank you message.  He said, “Wherever I went, whoever I met, be it, world leaders, industrialists or citizens from all walks of life, there is a great spirit of optimism towards India. There is also immense appreciation of India’s efforts to improve sanitation, healthcare and empower the poor.”

Mr. Modi will return to India on the 28th of September.
