The Civil Aviation Ministry announced to roll out face recognition for entry of passengers at the respective airports, starting from the 1st of December, Thursday.
The new face recognition would turn out to be a hassle free air travel experience, which would be done with the launch of a mechanism called Digi Yatra. This Digi Yatra is conceived to achieve contactless and seamless processing of passengers at airports based on Facial Recognition Technology (FRT.)
With this new feature roll out at airports, travellers need not pass through various checkpoints at the airports and would have paperless and contactless processing. Furthermore, with the facial recognition, which would be linked to the boarding pass would be easier for passengers to board their flights.
As of now, the facial recognition would be launched at seven airports and for domestic flight passengers only. The seven airports where this new feature has been launched are: Delhi, Bengaluru, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Vijayawada. As of now, this facial recognition is active at Delhi, Bengaluru and Varanasi airports. By 2023 March, other four airports would also have facial recognition features for passengers boarding domestic flights.
To use this facility, a one time registration on the Digi Yatra app is required using Aadhaar based validation and a self image capture.
There is no central storage of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and the passenger’s ID and travel credentials are stored in a secure wallet on the passenger’s smartphone itself.
