On the 19th of June, Sunday, the Indian Navy announced the recruitment of women sailors, under the newly launched “Agnipath”  scheme.

According to sources, Vice Admiral Mr. Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of Personnel, said, “As we speak, 30 women officers are sailing on board ships.  We have decided that time has come to recruit women sailors and in all trades which will include women who will go to sea.”

Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Dinesh K. Tripathi said, these women sailors would be posted on board warships upon completion of training.  With this, it would be the first time that women officials would be given positions of Personnel Below Officers’ Rank (PBOR) in the Indian Navy.

While the details of the new recruitment of women for the PBOR position are still underway, the Indian Navy confirmed to begin the training of the first batch of Agniveers (women) from November 2022.

Furthermore, Navy Chief Personnel Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi said all the necessary arrangements are being made at INS Chilka in Odisha, which is also the premier basic training establishment for the Indian Navy– to accommodate women recruits.

In addition, the Indian Navy is planning to recruit 3,000 sailors under the Agnipath scheme, of which 20% would be women.
