In a major accomplishment, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) constructed the world’s highest motorable road in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region. The road is constructed at a height of 19,300 feet passing through Umlingla Top.

The organization planned ‘Project Himank’ that included a 86 Km long stretch connecting Chisumle and Demchok villages. The Chief Engineer on the project, Brigadier D. M. Purvimath explained constructing a road at such a height came with a lot of life threatening challenges.

Mr. Purvimath said, “During peak summers, temperature hovers around minus 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, and in winters, it dips to minus 40 degrees. Oxygen level at the altitude is 50% less than at normal places.”

He further explained, “Efficiency of machines and manpower declines by 50% due to (the) harsh climate and less oxygen level. Also, machine operators have to come down every 10 minutes for oxygen.”

The Brigadier spoke of the logistic challenges at such a high altitude, “Taking equipment at such a height, repairing and maintaining it is a major task since equipment face a lot of breakdowns.”

Mr. Purvimath also said his personnel faced serious health problems like loss of eyesight, memory and high blood pressure. He was quoted saying, “Such a construction does not come without a cost, but given the national and strategic importance of the road, our men and machinery worked overnight to meet the targets set out by Director General, Border Roads.”

Commander 753 BRTF, Pradeep Raj reported all the BRO personnel went through rigorous training before the job was assigned. The Commander explained the training, “Acclimatisation of men is done at three stages Leh, Shakti and Numa, before being inducted into the sector. Physical and mental fitness of men is emphasized upon for working in the area as the working season is limited in the region.”

Project Himank has previously succeeded in constructing the Changla Pass at an altitude of 17,695 feet and the Khardangu La at 17,900 feet.
