The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO,) on the 22nd of July, finally launched its most awaited Chandrayaan 2 at 2:43 P.M.
The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, Mark III rocket (GSLV MK III,) named Chandrayaan 2, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
After the launch of Chandrayaan 1, the launch of the Chandrayaan 2 was a dream of India, which was planned by the Country nearly 16 years ago.
K. Sivan, the Chief of the ISRO, announced the successful inject of GSLV MK III into the orbit of Earth.
K. Sivan said, “I’m extremely happy to announce that the GSLV MK III-M1 successfully injected Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft into Earth Orbit. It is the beginning of a historic journey of India towards the Moon and to land at a place near the South Pole to carry out scientific experiments.”
After facing technical glitches on the 15th of July, the ISRO postponed the liftoff at the last moment. However, the team resolved the snag and came back with the new date in less than a week.
The launch is said to be a step to get a better understanding about the Moon.
Speaking about the journey of Chandrayaan 2 carrying lander Vikram, the Chandrayaan 2 will travel approximately 3,84,400 km and will land near the lunar South Pole, on the 6th of September.
According to sources, for the initial 17 days, the spacecraft will be within Earth’s phase, following which, its orbit will raise over 1.05 lakh km.
With the successful launch of Chandrayaan 2, India will become the 4th country to land on the Moon. The other three countries are Russia, the United State of America and China.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is extremely happy with the launch, took to Twitter and congratulated the ISRO team for the same.
