Jammu and Kashmir conducted its first phase of Panchayat polls, today, from 8:00 A.M., to 2:00 P.M. The polls are being conducted in the State after 9 long years, as the last Panchayat polls took place in 2011.

The elections are divided into nine phases. In the first phase, 84 Sarpanch and 1,676 Panch nominees were elected unopposed. On the other hand, 5,585 candidates will contest the remaining 420 Sarpanch and 1,845 Panch seats.

According to sources, the nine phases will have a total of 4,45,059 voters voting in the Sarpanch constituencies and 2,72,792 in the Panch constituencies. A total of 3,296 polling stations are arranged for the public to cast votes.

The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were deployed in order to conduct smooth Panchayat polls. The Government declared today as a holiday in all the areas where the polls are being conducted.

After Municipal elections, the Panchayat polls are the second elections being held in Jammu and Kashmir this year, after the major parties of the State stepped back from contesting the elections. The People’s Democratic Party and the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference boycotted the polls and are not contesting them.

Terrorist groups threatened the State Government against conducting the elections and the Separatists group called for a shutdown, today.

Despite all the hurdles, the State witnessed a voters’ turnout of 9 % till 10:00 A.M.

The polling areas for today’s elections are Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and Udhampur of Jammu, Leh and Kargil of Ladakh and Bandipora, Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kupwara and Srinagar of Kashmir.
