Jharkhand is conducting its 1st phase of State Assembly elections on the 30th of November.

The polling began at 7:00 A.M., and would continue till 3:00 P.M.

Approximately 189 Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) candidates are contesting 13 Assembly seats.  The constituencies where the polling is underway are Chatra, Gumla, Bishunpur, Lohardaga, Manika, Latehar, Panki, Daltonganj, Bishrampur, Chhatarpur, Hussainabad, Garhwa and Bhawanathpur.

In the first phase, 37,83,055 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, out of which 18,01,356 are women voters and 5 are third gender voters.

Jharkhand is going to contest a total of 81 Assembly seats in 5 phases, starting from the 30th of November.

The Jharkhand Police deployed personnel to conduct smooth and peaceful voting.  A total of 4,892 polling booths were set up by the Election Commission (EC) of Jharkhand for the first phase.

Murari Lal Meena, the State Police Nodal Officer, said out of the 4,892 polling booths, 1,097 stations are in Naxal affected areas and are hypersensitive, whereas 461 polling stations are sensitive.

The major parties contesting the first phase of the State Assembly elections are the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the grand alliance of the Indian National Congress (INC,) the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD.)

While the BJP is contesting 12 seats and supporting an independent candidate, the INC-JMM-RJD alliance divided the 13 constituencies amongst themselves.  The INC is contesting from 4 constituencies, the JMM from 6 and the RJD from 3

This year, for the first time, physically disabled citizens and individuals above the age of 80 would cast their votes using ballot paper, not Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs.)

The remaining 4 phases of the Jharkhand Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on the 7th of December, the 12th of December, the 16th of December and the 20th of December. 

The results of the Jharkhand Assembly elections would be announced on the 23rd of December.
