The President of India Ram Nath Kovind, on the 6th of April, appointed Justice N.V. Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI.)

The Union Government issued an official notification regarding the same. The notification read, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, The President is pleased to appoint Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief justice of India with effect from April 24.”

A native of Andhra Pradesh and a senior Judge of the Supreme Court (SC) Justice N.V. Ramana would take the oath as the CJI on the. 24th of April. The Outgoing CJI S.A. Bobde is due to retire on the 23rd of April 2021 and on the next day, Justice Ramana would take over. His term would end on the 26th of August 2022.

The appointment of Justice N.V. Ramana was based on a recommendation letter written by CJI S.A. Bobde. The recommendation from the outgoing CJI Bobde came after the Central Government asked him to recommend his successor. The selection of the CJI is based on seniority. 

With this, N.V. Ramana would be the second Chief Justice of India from Andhra Pradesh. In 1966, Justice K. Subba Rao, became the 9th CJI and the first from Andhra Pradesh.

Highlighting the career achievements of Justice N.V. Ramana, he was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on the 27th of June, 2000. He functioned as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from the 10th of March 2013 to the 20th of May 20, 2013. Later in 2013, He was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and he started as a judge in the Supreme Court from 2014. After CJI S.A. Bobde, Justice N.V. Ramana is the senior most Judge on the Apex Court.

The new CJI would be the 48th Chief Justice of India.
