Ishrat Jahan, a petitioner against triple talaq and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) on the 18th of July, alleged, some people threatened her near her residence in Howrah, Kolkata, West Bengal.

The allegations of Ms. Jahan came after she attended an event of Hanuman Chalisa reading, organised by the BJP.

On the 16th of July, the BJP organised the event near the Howrah A.C. Market and invited Ishrat as she is one of the members of the BJP.

Ishrat Jahan said, she is being threatened by her landlord and was asked to vacate her place as she went to a Hindu event wearing a hijab.

She registered a complaint at the Golabari Police Station and sought police protection for her 8 year old son, 14 year old daughter and herself. She sought protection from extremist groups, her landlord and her ex husband’s brother.

Ishrat Jahan lives alone, after her husband divorced her over a phone call. She said, “I used to be scared during the triple talaq hearing as no one supported me, but this is more frightening.”

Ishrat explained the incident and said, on the 17th of July, when she was returning home with her son, a few people surrounded her outside her building in Pilkhana, Howrah. The crowd manhandled her and asked why she attended a Hindu event wearing a hijab.

Ishrat said, “A huge crowd of people gathered outside my house and asked me why I went to attend a Hanuman Chalisa event wearing a hijab.” She further added, “I said I am a secular person. If Hindus can be invited to namaz, why can’t I go to a Hanuman Chalisa path.”

Later, she said, the people blamed her for disrespecting all the Muslims by wearing a hijab and going to a Hindu event.

An officer of the Golabari Police Station assured her protection and said, “We have started an enquiry into the complaint and necessary action will be taken.”

This is not the first case where religion caused a threat to someone’s life. Multiple cases of mob lynching, abuse and others, all in the name of religion, have been registered in the last few days.

The Police registered a case based on Ishrat Jahan’s complaint and an investigation for the same is underway.
