A 23 year old law student, who accused Swami Chinmayanand, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) of sexual assault, was arrested in an extortion case.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT,) on the 25th of September, arrested the girl from her residence in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh.  The arrest came a day after she moved a court in Shahjahanpur and appealed for protection from arrest. The court is scheduled to review her petition on the 26th of September.

Naveen Arora, the head of the SIT which is investigating the rape case against Chinmayanand, on the 24th of September, interrogated the girl and her three friends related to the case.

The SIT interrogated the girl and her friends, who allegedly demanded money from Chinmayanand.  The SIT arrested one of the three friends and remanded the other two for 95 hours.

The SIT even took them to the site to recover the mobile used for the extortion demand.  The SIT said one of the accused accepted the allegations and informed the SIT they threw the mobile used for extortion, near Mehandipur Balaji in Rajasthan.

On the 25th of September, Naveen Arora, along with female constables and officers, reached the residence of the girl and arrested her.  However, she refused to let them arrest her and said she is scheduled to appear in court. Soon, media and locals gathered at the location, following which, the police allowed her to go to the court.  Later, after her court hearing, the SIT arrested her and took her for a medical examination.

The family members of the 23 year old girl said she was taken out of the house “almost by force,” without her slippers.

On the other hand, Chinmayanand, who was arrested on the 20th of September, is in a hospital due to his health condition.

The SIT headed by Naveen Arora is still investigating the case filed against Swami Chinmayanand.

Stay tuned for further updates.
