During the session of the 17th Lok Sabha, on the 19th of July, The Protection of Human Rights (Amendments) Bill, 2019 was passed.

Nityanand Rai, the Minister of State for Home, presented the bill, which deals with human rights.

As per the amendments introduced in the new Protection of Human Rights Bill, the tenure of the chairpersons of national and state human rights bodies is reduced to 3 years from the existing 5 years. The Bill also says, apart from a former Chief Justice of India (CJI,) a former Supreme Court judge can also become the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC.)

Apart from the Human Protection Act, The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019 was also introduced.

Thaawarchand Gehlot, the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, introduced The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019, which deals with the social, economic and educational empowerment of people.

Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State for Prime Minister’s Office (PMO,) also introduced the Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2019.

On the 19th of July, the Parliament session was adjourned to the 22nd of July.

The session of the 17th Lok Sabha started from the 17th of June and will continue till the 26th of July.
