Approximately 11 people died on the 13th of September, during the immersion of a Ganesh idol in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP.)
The incident took place around 4:30 A.M., on the 13th of September, when a boat carrying 16 people capsized at Khatlapura Ghat, Bhopal.
The 16 individuals on the boat were carrying a heavy Ganesh idol. While they were immersing it, the boat tilted and further capsized, leading to 11 of them drowning.
Akhil Patel, the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Bhopal, confirmed the news about the deceased and said, “Five people have been rescued out of 16 and we have recovered 11 bodies till now. A search operation is underway and we are trying to rescue other people as well. According to the locals, only these many people had drowned here, but we are still searching in case we find some other people.”
According to sources, 40 police officials, professional swimmers and other officials of the State Government are at the Khatlapura Ghat. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is also present at the spot and is trying to rescue people.
P.C. Sharma, the Minister of Law and Legal Affair, Public Relations and Science and Technology of MP, reached the spot and said, “Despite proper security arrangements, this incident took place so we will investigate the matter and try to find out the reason behind this mishap.”
Mr. Sharma also informed the District Collector announced an ex gratia of Rs. 4 lakhs for the families of those who died in the incident.
An investigation regarding the incident will be launched.
