On the 9th of April, Maharashtra Cabinet nominated Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra as the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC.)

The recommendation to nominate Mr. Thackeray’s name as MLC from the Governor’s quota was taken by the Maharashtra Cabinet minister unanimously.

Amid the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19, the name would be given to Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Governor of Maharashtra , as there were two vacancies in the Council from the Governor’s quota.  After Rahul Narvekar and Ram Wadkute quit the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, the two seats fell vacant and the term for these seats ends in June, due to which the nomination was necessary.

Nawab Malik, the Minority Affairs Minister of Maharashtra said, “There are two other vacant seats for which the Governor nominates people, and the Cabinet requested that Mr. Thackeray to be nominated for one of them.

Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra chaired the meeting, conducted to take a decision on the nomination of Uddhav Thackeray.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) put a hold on all elections including Rajya Sabha due to the pandemic Coronavirus illness in India.  

Maharashtra is the only State with more than 1,000 cases of COVID-19 infection.

The State reported a total of  1,364 COVID-19 positive patients, 1,141 active cases, 125 recovered and 98 deaths till date.
