The newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Maharashtra took the oath of office on the 27th of November.

On the 26th of November, the Supreme Court ordered Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Governor of Maharashtra, to appoint a Protem Speaker to conduct the floor test on the 27th of November at 5:00 P.M.

As per these orders, Bhagat Singh Koshyari appointed Kalidas Kolambakar, a member of the BJP, as the Protem Speaker of the Assembly.  Mr. Kolambakar administered the oath to the MLAs.  The oath taking ceremony for the 288 newly elected MLAs started at 8:00 A.M., on the 27th of November at the Maharashtra Assembly.

Due to the ongoing tussle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena, the swearing in ceremony took place a month after the results of the Assembly elections were declared.  MLAs taking the oath without a State Government and a Chief Minister is a rare occasion.

On the 26th of November, both Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister, resigned from their respective posts.  Ajit Pawar, after rebelling for 3 days, came back to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP,) thereby reducing the chances of the BJP winning the floor test.

After the BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis resigned, the alliance of the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the evening of the 26th of November, met the Governor and staked claim to form the Government.  They nominated Uddhav Thackeray, the President of the Shiv Sena, as the Chief Minister candidate.

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari invited the NCP-Shiv Sena-INC alliance to form the Government and asked them to prove the alliance’s majority within 7 days of forming the Government.

Named Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi, the alliance of the NCP, the Shiv Sena and the INC has a total of 166 MLAs in support.

When asked about the Deputy Chief Minister’s post, Balasaheb Tharot, the President of the INC in Maharashtra, said, “No decision has been taken on who will be the deputy CM.”

While the MLAs’ oath taking ceremony is underway, Uddhav Thackeray, with his wife Rashmi Thackeray, met the Governor informally to discuss the Government formation.

With the alliance of the Shiv Sena, the INC and the NCP soon coming to power, the confusion regarding the Maharashtra Government would finally come to an end.

Uddhav Thackeray is soon going to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.  However, an official announcement regarding the date is yet to be made.

 Stay tuned for further updates.
