Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, on the 13th of August, filed his nomination for a Rajya Sabha seat in Rajasthan.

After the demise of Madan Lal Saini, the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) the Parliament seat in Jaipur, Rajasthan fell vacant.

The nominations came after the Election Commission (EC) of Rajasthan announced the schedule of the byelections for the Parliamentary seat in Rajasthan.

Manmohan Singh landed at the Jaipur Airport at 10:00 A.M., and went to JW Marriott in Jaipur.  Ashok Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Sachin Pilot, the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan and other senior leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC) received Mr. Singh.

Later, they held a discussion regarding the nomination and reached the office and filed his nomination.  After filing the nomination, the three of them went to the Rajasthan Assembly. The INC is confident about Manmohan Singh’s win in the State, as the INC has a total of 100 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs.)  Besides, the Party also enjoys the support of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the independent MLAs in the State. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 72 MLAs in the State.

The Rajasthan Assembly has a total of 200 seats.

As of now, the BJP did not announce the candidate contesting against Manmohan Singh in the byelections.

The last date for filing nominations for the Rajya Sabha seat is the 14th of August.
