Dr. Manmohan Singh, a member of the Indian National Congress (INC,) won the Rajya Sabha elections from Jaipur.
Mr. Singh filed his nomination papers on the 13th of August and was elected unopposed on the 19th of August.
Rajasthan has a total of 10 Rajya Sabha seats, out of which, one fell vacant after the demise of Madan Lal Saini, the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the State and a MP.
As of now, 9 Rajya Sabha seats are with the BJP, whereas after the win of Manmohan Singh, one is with the INC. Manmohan Singh won the elections unanimously as there was no other candidate in the fray against the INC. The BJP did not nominate any candidate against Manmohan Singh for the post.
On the other hand, the INC was confident about the victory of Manmohan Singh, as the INC has a high number of MLAs in the Assembly, compared to the BJP.
Out of the 200 Assembly seats in Rajasthan, the INC owns 100 seats, whereas the BJP has 72 seats. The remaining seats belong to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and independent candidates.
The INC has the support of all the 6 BSP MLAs and 12 independent MLAs.
Ashok Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, congratulated Manmohan Singh and said, “I congratulate former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh ji on being elected unopposed as a member of Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. Dr. Singh’s election is a matter of pride for (the) entire State. His vast knowledge and rich experience would benefit the people of Rajasthan a lot.”
Mr. Singh will soon take over his charge as the MP of the Jaipur constituency in Rajasthan.
