Manoj Sinha, the former Minister of Railways of Jammu and Kashmir, on the 7th of August, took oath as the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of the Union Territory. 

Mr. Sinha was appointed by the Central Government, who replaced Girish Chandra Murmu, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

G.C. Murmu, who was the first LG of Jammu and Kashmir after being a union territory, resigned on the 5th of August.

After accepting Mr. Murmu’s resignation, the Central Government appointed him as India’s new Comptroller Auditor General (CAG)

Mr.Sinha reached Srinagar on the evening of the 6th of August through a State plane.

On the same day Manoj Sinha conducted an informal meeting with B.V.R Subrahmanyam, the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir and the four advisers to the former LG.

Mr. Sinha is a three time Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) who lost the 2019 election from Gorakhpur constituency.

The oath ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan. Gita Mittal, the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir administered the oath of office to Manoj Sinha.

Manoj Sinha, 61 years old, is the first politician to be the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory, Jammu and Kashmir.

Due to the pandemic Novel Coronavirus situation, the oath taking ceremony was a low key affair.

Advisors to the previous LG like Farooq Khan, Baseer Khan and senior bureaucrats and policemen were present at the ceremony.

Rajya Sabha member Nazir Ahmed Laway, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member Jugal Kishore Sharma and Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party leader Ghulam Hasan Mir also attended the event.
