Another shocking incident of rape and sexual assault came to light on the 11th of December.  Four men, including a minor, gang raped a 22 year old man in Mumbai after tracing his location using Instagram.

On the night of the 8th of December, around 10:30 P.M., the victim posted a selfie outside a restaurant.  Soon after he made the Instagram post, the four men traced the restaurant which was located in Kurla, Suburban District, Mumbai.  The accused went to the victim and said they follow him on Instagram and are his fans. They even requested the victim to go on a bike ride with him.  The victim agreed and went with them.

After 20 minutes, the 22 year old man realised they were heading to Vidyavihar and asked them to stop.  However, the accused refused to do so and took the 22 year old man outside a hotel near the Mumbai Airport, forced him to sit in a car, in which one of the accused was waiting for them.  The accused even used the victim’s credit card at a petrol pump and also took Rs. 2,000 from him for their personal use.

The four of them later sexually assaulted him and gang raped him for 3 hours and dumped him on a road around 1:30 A.M., of the 9th of December.

The victim then immediately called his parents and registered a complaint at the Vinoba Bhave (VB) Police Station in Kurla.  Though the incident took place on the 8th of December, it came to light after the Mumbai Police arrested the culprits and launched an investigation for the same.

The Police registered a case under Section 377 (forcible same sex intercourse,) Section 392 (robbery) and Section 323 (assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)

Acting upon the complaint, within 24 hours, the Police, with the help of the registration numbers of the two wheeler and the car they got from CCTV footage, traced the accused and arrested them.  The suspects were identified as Mehul Parmar (21), Asif Ali Ansari (23) and Piyush Chauhan (22.) The identity of the minor is yet to be revealed.

Madhuri Pokle, a senior police official of the VB Nagar Police Station, said, “All the accused are remanded to police custody… We are taking down further statements in the case and investigating the sequence. We are awaiting reports from the hospital as well.”

While the three men are in police custody, the minor was sent to a remand home.

The investigation regarding the case is still underway.
