Mr. Harsh Chouhan, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes addressed the important health facility issue, tribals are facing.

During the SAMWAD, a dialogue program organized under the title “Tribal Health and Evaluation of Health Systems in Scheduled Areas”, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes said, there is a need to improve health services in tribal areas.  During the two days event, on the 15th and the 16th of March, Mr. Harsh Chouhan said,  “When it comes to the health care in the tribal societies, often we presume that the tribal people are superstitious, which is not true.  If health care facilities do not reach them, then they look for alternatives.  They definitely accept modern health care services.”

He justified his points and said, during the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, no tribal person denied the COVID-19 vaccine.  Mr. Harsh said, “The purpose of conducting this two-day dialogue SAMVAD was to deliberate about solutions to their health problems, but not about the problems alone.”

Emphasizing the need of reformation of medical facilities in the tribal sector, Mr. Harsh Chouhan said, “There is a need to communicate with the tribal societies to understand them and their health needs.  Tribal health infrastructure is certainly weak.  Due to health problems, we observe an increasing debt among the tribal people these days. It is reported that a small tribal family carries a debt of about one to three lakh rupees, on an average.”

Concluding the two days dialogue, the National Commission for ST urged the Central Government to work for the improvement of the tribal sector medical infrastructure, which would help these tribals and development of the rural region in India.
