Starting Saturday, all the National and State Highways will be at least 500 meters away from liquor vendors. All the vendors that have been selling alcohol alongside the highways will be shut down according to the Supreme Court. The SC refused to make any changes to the order passed in the past that states the same. This is an attempt by the SC to reduce drunken driving.

After the SC passed the judgment in past, hotels and restaurants have demanded the court to remove this ban as it was leading to losses. But with the increase of drunken driving deaths in the country, the apex court refused to budge from its decision. The bench led by the Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar made a few changes to the previous order and passed a new one that said, “In municipal areas having less than 20,000 population situated on highways, the (earlier) distance of 500 meters has been reduced to 220 meters.”

The court banned alcohol sale 500 meters alongside highways, but yesterday it changed the order and said that the vendors will stay operative in areas other than those specified by the court. The Bench has provided an exemption to Meghalaya and Sikkim keeping in mind the geographical conditions and changed the order of December 15, 2016. The same exemption was demanded by Himachal Pradesh, which the SC rejected. The bench said that the state can have vendors 220 meters away from the highway and will be enough to cover the State’s demand.
