Vinay Sharma, one of the convicts in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case, filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court (SC,) a few days ahead of the death sentence execution.
On the 9th of January, Vinay Sharma exercised the last legal option to save himself from the death sentence and submitted his plea against the verdict.
On the 7th of January, a Delhi court announced all the 4 convicts in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case would be hanged to death on the 22nd of January at 7:00 A.M.
In his petition, Vinay Sharma said, “To eliminate systemic and political bias against the Petitioner, it is imperative that this case be reheard in open court by the senior most judges of this Hon’ble Court without the Damocles sword of an execution warrant handing over the proceedings (sic.)”
The petition came after the Tihar Jail administration announced they would soon conduct a dummy execution, which involves testing the gallows using weights and other factors.
All the convicts would be hanged in jail number 3 of Tihar Jail, Delhi.
Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh would be executed together at Tihar Jail.
The hangman would be from the Uttar Pradesh Prison Department.
