Nitin Gadkari, the Transport Minister of India, on the 5th of September, spoke about the new Motor Vehicle Act, 2019 and shared the Government’s vision behind the Act.
The Government of India, on the 1st of September, imposed the new Motor Vehicle Act, 2019, which includes heavy fines up to Rs. 40,000 for violating traffic rules across India.
However, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal did not implement the new Motor Vehicle Act, 2019 and are still discussing the matter. Nitin Gadkari addressed the public at the annual Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Convention in Delhi and said, “The Government does not desire to raise the limits of fine. The issue is that a time should come that no one gets penalised and everyone follows the rules.”
Mr. Gadkari said with the fear of heavy penalties and the law, the citizens will not violate any traffic rules, which will ultimately reduce the number of traffic violation cases in India.
Nitin Gadkari said, “Who will be responsible for accidents caused by those who don’t follow traffic laws?”
According to the new Act, one has to pay Rs. 10,000 or more for driving under the influence of alcohol, not giving way to ambulances or fire brigade and others. The violation of traffic rules could also lead to imprisonment. Apart from these, those riding without helmets will have to pay Rs. 1,000 as fine and their license would also be suspended for at least 3 months.
After the implementation of the Motor Vehicle Act on the 4th of September, the Transport Department fined an intoxicated autorickshaw driver Rs. 47,500 for driving without a valid permit, license and registration, as per the new Act.
In another similar case, the traffic police of Gurugram fined a two wheeler rider Rs. 23,000 for several traffic violations.
The Government of India imposed strict rules for violating traffic rules to create awareness regarding road safety amongst the citizens.
