The Supreme Court received 14 petitions to consider exchanging their demonetized currency as they were unable to do it during the time slot allotted by the RBI. The Apex Court arranged a five judge Constitution Bench to address each of the individual pleas.

Attorney General K. K. Venugopal said the Government has decided to not take any action against those possessing demonetized currency.

One of the petitioner’s lawyers said, “Our hard earned money has been confiscated without due process of law and without granting fair opportunity.”

Among the 14 petitioners, some are NRIs who were not in the country during Demonetization and missed the deadline for exchange.

Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A. M. Khanwilkar and D. Y. Chandrachud addressed the petitioners queries and asked the lawyers to file an official application. These applications will be handled by the Constitution Bench later.
