Abhijit Banerjee, the winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics, on the 22nd of October, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after meeting Abhijit Banerjee, posted a picture on Twitter with the caption reading, “His passion towards human empowerment is clearly visible. We had a healthy and extensive interaction on various subjects. India is proud of his accomplishments.”

Speaking about the meeting, Abhijit Banerjee said PM Modi praised him for his unique thinking about India.

Abhijit said, “I think it is a very important point for India to create a bureaucracy that actually lives on the ground and gets its stimulus from how life is on the ground. Without that, we get an unresponsive government.”

Abhijit Banerjee, who is known for his unique theory, shared his view regarding the Indian economy and ideas to improve it.  During the meeting, Abhijit also shared his views about policymakers who cut down taxes with the belief it is the solution to the problem of slow economic growth.  Giving suggestions to the Indian Government, Banerjee said the Government should collect a lot of economic data to find out the severity of the slowing economic growth and work accordingly.

Abhijit Banerjee came to India after winning the Nobel Prize 2019, on the 19th of October.   After his meeting with PM Modi, Abhijit will visit Kolkata and is expected to travel abroad on the 24th of October.
