P.Chidambaram, the former Finance Minister of India, on the 5th of September, was taken to Tihar Jail, Asia’s largest jail, which is in Delhi.
Mr. Chidambaram was taken after the Supreme Court (SC) rejected his bail appeal in the INX Media money laundering case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating the case since 2015.
Although the legal team of Chidambaram tried hard to get protection from arrest, they could not save Chidambaram from going to jail.
The CBI, on the 5th of September, ordered P. Chidambaram to remain in judicial custody, following which, he will be in Tihar Jail for the next two weeks.
P. Chidambaram will be imprisoned in jail number seven with special facilities, as he has Z level security. The CBI court agreed to the plea of Kapil Sibal, the advocate of P. Chidambaram and agreed for special facilities in the jail. The special facilities which would be provided to Chidambaram would be a separate cell, a cot, a bathroom with western style facilities, security and medicines.
Apart from these, Chidambaram is allowed to watch TV for a specified period, read books at the prison’s library and can get a newspaper.
After he was put in the Tihar Jail, his morning started like a normal prisoner. On the 6th of September, Chidambaram was given tea for breakfast around 6 A.M., along with bread, poha and porridge.
The CBI court ordered a 14 day judicial custody to P. Chidambaram, following which, it will hear the case again.
