On Friday, Pakistan said that it wants to amicably solve all issues with India, including Kashmir. The statement caused a stir as the previous statement read that no country can unilaterally revoke the Indus Water Treaty. Kashmir has been an ongoing issue between India and Pakistan from the time of Independence. The Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria appealed to the international community to play its role in helping resolve the long-standing issue. He added, “we want to amicably resolve all outstanding issues including Kashmir with India.”

While making an opening statement during the briefing, Zakaria said, “we condemn the unabated violation of UNSC Resolutions on Kashmir by India.” Reports have been rife that India made changes to the Indus water treaty after the Uri terror attack. Nafees Zakaria said that the accord can neither be changed nor altered or suspended by one country alone. He said that “No country can abrogate the treaty.” He added that Pakistan is keeping a close eye on the changing situation and that they would follow a strategy in case of any violation of the treaty. To the Pakistan Radio, he quoted “We will assess India’s activities within the framework of the Indus Waters Treaty.”

Zakaria also pointed out that there in a proper method to resolve issues and the implementation of these arbitrary changes in the treaty. He added that in the past many issues have been solved amicably, then why not this.
