The 1st of July, birth anniversary and death anniversary of Dr. B.C. Roy is celebrated as Doctors’ Day across India.

Dr. Roy passed away on the 1st of July 1962.  Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948-1962.

Born in 1882, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was a freedom fighter, physician and contributed in medical fields with new techniques and methods to treat patients.

Besides PM Modi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu and other leaders and politicians also expressed gratitude towards doctors on the ocassion.

Mr. Naidu took to Twitter and said, “On this Doctor’s Day, I pay my tributes to Dr BC Roy, former Chief Minister of West Bengal and legendary physician, who made an invaluable contribution to the development of the medical field in India. #doctorsday.”

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, declared a State holiday for doctors in the State, marking the National Doctors’ Day.

However, the West Bengal Doctors’ Forum (WBDF) rejected the decision and decided to work.

Dr. Koushik Chaki, the Secretary of the WBDF, said, “The State Government has declared the 1st of July as a State holiday to honour the doctors and frontline COVID-19 warriors. However, in the middle of the pandemic, we reject such a rhetoric.”  He further added, “If the state government really wants to pay tribute to the doctors, they must ensure the safety and security of every healthcare professional as that has been our long standing demand. Doctors will be in the battlefield on that day, like any other day in the effort to save lives.  We have suggested to the state government that if they really want to pay tribute, they should do so by ensuring ongoing teaching and training in tertiary care medical colleges where both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 people can be treated, if properly planned.”

Twitter is also flooded with gratitude messages appreciating doctors who are putting their lives in danger and treating patients.

Stay tuned for further updates.
