On the 7th of October, Thursday, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, inaugurated 35 pressure swing adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants.
The establishment of the 35 PSA oxygen plants in India has been made under the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation (PM CARES) funds. With this, 35 states and union territories (UTs) of India would have one PSA oxygen plant. The new 35 PSA oxygen plants would be an addition to the existing 1,224 PSA oxygen plants funded by the PM CARES funds in India. Of the total, approximately 1,100 plants have an output of providing 1,750 metric tonnes (MT) oxygen in a day.
The inauguration event was organised at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS ) in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. Besides Mr. Narendra Modi, Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister and other Uttarakhand Government officials were present at the event.
The efforts of establishing PSA oxygen plants in 35 states and UTs of India is said to be a major step to boost the medical infrastructure of India.
The decision of the oxygen plant establishment could be based on the recent scarcity of oxygen for COVID-19 patients. During the second wave of the Wuhan virus in April 2021, states and UTs of India suffered a major oxygen supply crisis for patients admitted at several government hospitals.
With the PSA oxygen plants, the matter of oxygen supply would be resolved, as there would be a needed amount of oxygen in every state and UT of India.
The 35 new PSA oxygen plants would be handled by 7,000 trained personnels across India.
