PNB Scam: Nirav Modi Says He Will Not Return To India

Earlier this week, Nirav Modi, the main accused in the Rs. 12,700 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud sent an email to the CBI. Modi in his mail said he will not return to India as he has business to take care of and added the probe agency can reach him on his Gmail ID.

Modi’s email read, “Various media houses have already tagged me as a fugitive, though I am not one. Moreover, it has come to my knowledge that a great deal of mileage is being drawn by the political parties and media by connecting a Bill with me, branding me as the reason for the passing of the said Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill.”

On the 1st of March, the Union Cabinet approved the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill to enable the Government to confiscate properties of offenders who flee India.

Earlier, the CBI mailed Modi asking him to return to India. They further asked him to approach the nearest Indian Embassy to get a one time emergency travel document as his passport stands revoked.

Modi pointed out he was not provided with a reason for the revocation of his passport nor for the attachment of his properties by the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate. Modi further stressed out by visiting the law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, the CBI violated the client attorney privilege.

Modi wrote, “In view of the acts of the Investigating Agency of raiding the office of an advocate, now, even the professionals are wary of giving me legal advice and I am not a position to retrieve any documents/information, to answer notices, queries and proceedings initiated against me by multiple agencies.”

Modi alleged the CBI’s harsh investigation procedures led to B. K. Bansal and his family taking their own lives. Bansal was a Director General in the Corporate Affairs Ministry. The CBI arrested Bansal on the charges of taking a bribe.

Nirav Modi, along with his kin fled India in the first week of January. Though there are speculations about Modi’s whereabouts, he has not shared anything with regard to his current location.
