Pranab Mukherjee, the former President of India, will be awarded the Bharat Ratna, on the 8th of August.
Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, will give the award to Pranab Mukherjee, who served Indian politics for five decades. During his political career, Pranab Mukherjee served as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) under Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.
Pranab Mukherjee was the 13th President of India, from 2012 to 2017. Prior to becoming the President of India, Mr. Mukherjee served as the Finance Minister of India from 2009 to 2012.
Speaking about the early life of Mr. Mukherjee, he was born in a Bengali family in Mirati village, Birbhum district, West Bengal.
He completed his Master’s degree in Political Science, History and LLB from the University of Calcutta.
The announcement about Pranab Mukherjee being honoured with India’s highest civilian honour was made on the 25th of January. After the announcement, Mr. Mukherjee expressed his happiness and said, “I’ve received much more from the people and this country than I have given to it. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the people of this country…At the same time, with all humility, I accept this honour. I have conveyed my appreciation by talking to the President of the Republic. I also convey my deepest gratitude to the people of this Country.”
Along with Pranab Mukherjee, late legendary singer Shri Bhupen Hazarika and late social activist Shri Nanaji Deshmukh will also be conferred with the Bharat Ratna award, posthumously.
